WHAT just walked past my kitchen window?!

A MOOSE!! M-O-O-S-E - not mouse - MOOSE!!

We've seen quite a few moose since moving to Maine - on the road, in a bog, accidents (unfortunately more than deer here). We've been told they come each fall to eat apples at the apple tree in our back yard. We looked and looked last fall for any signs - none - no sightings. Our neighbor had been chased up his ladder by a bull moose last fall while shingling his roof. Hmmmm .... I had always thought why hadn't WE seen any around here. We've seen fox, we've seen bear - but no moose - UNTIL THIS MORNING!!! :) - bigger than a horse - with a rack like the one in the photo :).

I had always imagine a moose wandering through our yard much like the Moose on the show "Northern Exposure" years ago (OK - I just dated myself - oh well) - and you know what - that's just what it did. NO running, no steam from his nostrils - just a peaceful jaunt past my kitchen window (about 6 feet from me)!

My first instinct was to grab Lexi and run to the window in the living room to see where he was going. And that's what we did. We ran just in time to see him cross our street, and into the little wooded area and then down to the river. I didn't grab my camera - and I wish I had, but I really wanted Lexi to see it in our yard :). so you'll have to take my word for it!

That made my day :) - the start of hunting season for moose started last week - and the last three moose I've seen have been in the back of trucks - and Jay told me about a bad accident he had seen coming home the other night of a car and big bull moose. It was thrilling to see one just enjoying his morning!

I hope we see our friend again soon - and that it's under the same circumstances, me INSIDE - and the moose OUTSIDE!! :)
